

Communities in this region include Restoule, Commanda, Port Loring, Byng Inlet, Pointe au Baril, Parry Sound, McKellar, Dunchurch, Magnetewan, South River, Sundridge, Burk`s Falls, Huntsville, Rosseau, Mac Tier, Port Sandfield, Windermere, Port Carling, Bala, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Honey Harbour.
The Muskoka, Parry Sound and Algonquin Park Region is sometimes referred to as Ontario's Near North.
The Muskoka area is well known as a vacation destination. As early as 1896 Timothy Eaton, Canada's department store king, built a grand summer residence known as Ravenscrag on Lake Rosseau.
The Parry Sound area is less populated and the terrain a bit more rugged, but it is unsurpassed in beauty. Thousands of lakes, rivers and streams make this area popular with sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Algonquin Provincial Park is one of Ontario's best known parks and encompasses a huge forested area. Camping is allowed within the park and visitors can also explore numerous trails or take a guided canoe trip through the park.
